You picked probably the one trope on the list that I'd be least comfortable writing! I don't think I've ever written a historical AU. It's in the same nerve-set as writing for comics, which tend to have uncomfortable levels of canon and copious numbers of people ready to correct you, but even worse because there are MILLIONS OF HISTORY NERDS who know ALL OF THE THINGS and know MORE OF THE THINGS than I do. There is literally no period of history that I would feel comfortable writing, because I really just don't think I could fake it.

Which actually really sucks ass, because I have such a killer idea for a time travel original novel, but it requires SO MUCH HISTORY KNOWLEDGE I just don't think I could pull it off convincingly enough. I'm not cool enough to be a proper history nerd. D:

But I love reading them! Especially when it's super clear how much the writer loves that era! I've read a couple of really cool renaissance-era fics, and ofc all of the Eagle fics in the world are excellent. I salute the people who attempt it, but I'm just not of the right brain-type to manage it, I think. Alas.
