It's a trope that can be pulled off to good affect, especially if it's paired with shipping (has there been gen truth or dare fics? if so, it'll be because of tension, or there's a secret to be revealed - so how do you do that without the truth or dare seeming really contrived? Hmmm) but I don't think it's always pulled off well. I think the trouble with the trope is because you tend to be younger when you love the trope a lot, then the fics that have it tend to be... less nuanced. NOT ALL, but... a lot of them. Possibly more than some other tropes (althOUGH I bet soulmate fic has a lot of unsubtle fic to it?)
I know I read a fic once which really pulled it off well - it had character A of my ship go to kiss character B as part of a dare, and character B was a little disgruntled - and then it had the neat twist end that character A hadn't been dared to kiss character B -- character A had just been dared to kiss the person he had a crush on. So that was really neat, and probably means I'd never discount it as a trope.
I think I'd just be worried about pulling it off without resorting to a thousand other cliches at the same time?
How about you? What do you think?

How about historical AUs?

Which actually really sucks ass, because I have such a killer idea for a time travel original novel, but it requires SO MUCH HISTORY KNOWLEDGE I just don't think I could pull it off convincingly enough. I'm not cool enough to be a proper history nerd. D:
But I love reading them! Especially when it's super clear how much the writer loves that era! I've read a couple of really cool renaissance-era fics, and ofc all of the Eagle fics in the world are excellent. I salute the people who attempt it, but I'm just not of the right brain-type to manage it, I think. Alas.

I love wingfic, I like the trope where wings are sensitive and an extra sense organ (maybe because the love interest of the story touching the wings can give elements of first time even to an established pairing, and first time fics are always the first fics in a ship I will look for) and flying would be freaking amazing. Plus I love secrets being hidden, and wings being hidden are always awesome, because bam, here are my wings, awesome secret reveal moment.
I wrote a segment of a wingfic (which you read, thank you ♥) and one day I will do a 50k wingfic adventure because it needs to be done. \o/
