I am racking my brain to think about whether I've ever actually written it because not gonna lie, when I was sixteen I definitely had a plot bunny for it, and I did think it was a cool trope, but I can't actually remember if I did or not. And because I deleted so many fics I can honestly just say I don't know. But. Erm. It does sound likely. OH! Maybe it was a (AWFUL! HIDEOUS! WHO LETS TWELVE YEAR OLDS ON THE INTERNET??!!) stargate sg-1 fic, but it was enforced truth telling with no dare option. So I've HALF done the trope?
It's a trope that can be pulled off to good affect, especially if it's paired with shipping (has there been gen truth or dare fics? if so, it'll be because of tension, or there's a secret to be revealed - so how do you do that without the truth or dare seeming really contrived? Hmmm) but I don't think it's always pulled off well. I think the trouble with the trope is because you tend to be younger when you love the trope a lot, then the fics that have it tend to be... less nuanced. NOT ALL, but... a lot of them. Possibly more than some other tropes (althOUGH I bet soulmate fic has a lot of unsubtle fic to it?)
I know I read a fic once which really pulled it off well - it had character A of my ship go to kiss character B as part of a dare, and character B was a little disgruntled - and then it had the neat twist end that character A hadn't been dared to kiss character B -- character A had just been dared to kiss the person he had a crush on. So that was really neat, and probably means I'd never discount it as a trope.
I think I'd just be worried about pulling it off without resorting to a thousand other cliches at the same time?
